ABOUT US

With the understanding that human triumphs and frailty are as much the stuff of unconscious imagination as fact and human perspective and truth is often times, multifaceted and kaleidoscopic in nature, La Medicina seeks to weave Truth into mass awareness in balanced alignment -- always mindful of the responsibility the camera holds.

La Medicina collaborates with filmmakers creating content aimed at uniting the global community in which we live through a common understanding that documentary is a medium engineered first and foremost by Truthseekers who act as storytellers. As such, we support the development of projects that act as sacred spaces in the industry upon which we, as a society, can explore our collective reflection - projects that critique with nuance and depth the choices and processes for living we, as a society, allow and their ever-evolving consequences as demonstrated by our films . Through the creation of documentary content that stimulates and inspires conversations and action, we delight in presenting a platform for the filmmaking medicine we offer -- a lens through which we can collectively view ourselves by exploring complicated truths about the world around us that inspire us to become the evolution of the world in which we choose to live.

BEHIND THE CAMERA

SONJA SOHN

FOUNDING DIRECTOR

Sonja Sohn’s journey to documentary filmmaking evolved from artistic pursuits that began during the height of the 80s art revolution in NYC where she attended the School of Visual Arts. During the 90s, she shifted to pursue her passion for writing, eventually landing at Brooklyn College where her love for poetry and storytelling took over and sent her on an unexpected trajectory towards the entertainment industry, eventually co-writing and co-starring in the film, SLAM, which won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and the Camera d’Or Prize at Cannes in 1998.

From the outset, transferring her skills across visual, performance and written mediums has been a part of her organic evolution as an artist and filmmaker. Through years of developing methods and processes for eliciting authentic expression and storytelling logic in front of the camera, she sets the tone for truth telling and brings to La Medicina a keen sense for people who have captivating, powerful stories to tell - gravitating towards complex narratives that crack open unique perspectives from those whose voices are rarely heard up close.

Working with a talented crew of producers, cinematographers and composers whose collaborative talents make La Medicina films soar, Baltimore Rising and The Slow Hustle illustrate the very beginning of La Medicina's scope, impact, reach and potential - and Sohn is committed to forwarding the collective through supporting unflinching, uncomfortable truthful stories that light the way.

MAHRYA MACINTIRE

AFFILIATED PRODUCER

Mahrya came to La Medicina as a stand out co-producer on Baltimore Rising whose talents and commitment quickly belied her value as a producer of depth and keen storytelling insight. Earning a News & Documentary Emmy® Award nomination as the producer of  The Slow Hustle, she has a tried and true sense of what it takes to usher passion projects with complicated story narratives through the finish line.  Her film work explores topics related to community (re)building and trauma healing, from an embodied perspective. Fascinated with the intersection of visual anthropology, pattern illumination, and creative strategy, she approaches each project as a kinetic historical collage.
